Nowadays, it seems unheard of to take in a nice phở, food platter, or even a pizza without Sriracha or Tapatio to accompany the flavors. Indeed, the two condiments have ingrained themselves in the American palette over the past few years, coming to rival Heinz ketchup and mustard as the brands and toppings of choice amongst a new generation of consumers. The Chinese American Museum celebrates this paradigm shift with a new exhibition: “L.A. Heat,” which recognizes the integration of Asian and Latino culture in the United States through the lens of the two popular sauces. A selection of artists, including Jose Ramirez, Audrey Chan and Sand One, have been tapped to create Sriracha- and Tapatio-inspired artwork for the exhibition. Of particular note is a series of MTN Hardcore spray cans and hand-embellished prints by renowned artist OGSlick, cleverly integrating the influence of Sriracha into a contemporary symbol.
