Many children express a fascination with the composition of things by breaking them down to their most basic elements. Using this as a framework of sorts, “things come apart” is a survey of everyday items deconstructed to their minute parts. Behind the exhibition is Toronto-based photographer Todd McLellan, who has meticulously taken apart items such as vintage typewriters, bicycles and lawnmowers, organizing each bolt, nut and rod into a set of compositions. Alongside this, McLellan has also photographed ‘explosions’ of the deconstructions, which gives an interesting, if not fantastic, new perspective to each item. “things come apart” is on display now at The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago until May 19.
