In a solo exhibit titled “The Belle of the Brawl,” Oakland-based artist Jesse Hazlip presents his own vivid interpretation of the war in Iraq. The artist’s depiction of maimed wild buffalo and heron birds with war weaponry drawn in place of their heads aims to examine the social and political patterns of war as the same mistakes are repeated over and over again. Using iconography from Hazlip’s previous work, the exhibition features more than 20 mixed media works using everything from wood to a large installation piece. The exhibit is currently on display at 941 Geary Gallery in San Francisco until Feb. 26.
