Ruby Neri Presents 'Wall Works' at David Kordansky Gallery

On view in Los Angeles until October 22.

Ruby Neri is an American artist best known for her cartoonish and somewhat grotesque sculptures that explore the female form. Born in the Bay Area and now based in Los Angeles, Neri draws heavily on 20th Century West Coast traditions, along with anthropology and art history to create folkloric artwork that reflect the wide range of human emotions.

David Kordansky is showcasing Neri’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery and some of her largest work to date. As the title implies, Wall Works is comprised of a series of new wall-based ceramic sculptures, along with an eight-foot bronze sculpture, which marks the first time Neri has worked with the medium.

Emblematic of her career, much of the artwork centers around Neri’s cast of woman characters — each reflecting various states of being and the anxieties ushered in by the demands of the present day. “Neri’s entourage of clay and bronze figures possesses a collective energy of survival—a utopian future where joining hands calls for a powerful embrace of the haunting unknown, together in form and spirit. Across this new body of work, these spirited figures march, kick, flail, and tug toward and against a future that is at once frustratingly difficult, yet triumphantly hopeful,” wrote a press release by the gallery.

Wall Works opened over the weekend and will be on view at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles until October 22.

Elsewhere, Brad Pitt and Nick Cave make their art exhibition debut.
