Joe Bradley Presents 'New Paltz' at Xavier Hufkens

On view in Brussels until October 15.

Joe Bradley likes to make art. He doesn’t subscribe to any style per say, rather, he floats from canvas to sculpture and back again, always carrying an air of curiosity and a penchant for experimentation. In the past, this has translated into vivid planes of color that subtly reference the canons of art history, while simultaneously referencing his own life experiences with that of contemporary culture.

The New York City-based artist is currently showing a recent series of large-scale paintings and paper-based work at Xavier Hufkens in Brussels. The larger, more gestural work, was painted on the floor and created to challenge the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, while interestingly recording the process of Bradley’s own studio practice.

The smaller drawings are more suggestive of a comic-book strip, where the artist omits any narrative structure, in favor of spontaneous figures, texts and abstractions from Bradley’s endless library of jokes and enigmas.

New Paltz by Joe Bradley is on view at the gallery’s St. Georges location until October 15.
