Daniel Arsham Presents '31st Century Still Lifes' at Perrotin

On view in Tokyo until October 15.

If cities are beacons of inspiration, than Tokyo has shown to be a muse of sorts for Daniel Arsham over the past few years. Recently, the acclaimed American artist has worked with a number of prominent galleries and legendary studios in the Japanese capital to further his artistic practice — be it a series of sculptures and his very own episode with Pokémon to an entire exhibition exploring the matter at NANZUKA.

Late last month, the artist quietly opened a new solo exhibition at Perrotin’s Tokyo outpost in Minato City. 31st Century Still Lifes is Arsham’s second solo show at Perrotin Tokyo and as the format mentioned in the title explains, the work on view showcases the artist’s many sources of inspiration — from Jordan Brand and Porsche, Yankees caps and art books, to of course, Greco-Roman artifacts.

Mapped across the space are a number of still-life paintings made in an impasto technique, along with two new sculptures made from various amalgamated metals. Additionally, Arsham has created a series of three movie posters in his signature aesthetic, using geological materials, such as hydrostone with blue calcite and quartz crystals. The three films E.T., Back to the Future, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, once gleamed to moviegoers as a vision of the future, but have since fallen into decay as another relic of the distant past.

31st Century Still Lifes is on view in Tokyo until October 15.
