CONTROL Is a New LA Gallery That Should Be On Your Radar

The inaugural exhibition will feature work from Felipe Pantone, Paul Insect, FUTURA2000, Kenny Scharf and more.

Los Angeles has long held the back-seat when it comes to the U.S. art scene, but a noticeable shift is beginning to take place. Amongst the heavy hitters, Pace recently acquired Kayne Griffen Gallery to set up shop out West; similarly, Hauser & Wirth will open a second location in West Hollywood, Marian Goodman will also open a space and Frieze has expanded to the Santa Monica Airport to house its next edition.

To add to the list, Beyond the Streets and ICNCLST have partnered up to unveil a new 4,000-square-foot space dubbed CONTROL Gallery. Located on La Brea Avenue, just a stones throw from UNDEFEATED and Stüssy, the burgeoning location will feature the art collective’s esteemed roster, including André Saraiva, Cleon Peterson, Eddie Martinez, Felipe Pantone and the list goes on. Additionally, the gallery has a dedicated gift shop filled to the brim with hard-to-find books, limited-edition prints, sculptural editions and collectibles, along with an outdoor area perfect for parties and receptions.

“The artist always comes first. Our role is to simply tell their stories in the most genuine way possible, while opening doors to opportunities beyond expectations,” said Beyond the Streets founder, Roger Gastman, in a statement.

Opening to the public tomorrow, September 24, the inaugural exhibition is titled POST-GRAFFITI and will feature legendary and emerging artists, such as CRASH, Ozzie Juarez, Eric HAZE, Felipe Pantone, Paul Insect, Othelo Gervacio and many more. Highlights include a special collaborative painting and screen-print by artists FUTURA2000 and Kenny Scharf, who interestingly enough, have never worked on a piece together, despite creating in the same space for over 40 years.

Like all major cities, LA is constantly expanding and not every shop or ‘concept space’ is a good thing. But CONTROL feels right — it adds to the high-street what so many have failed to do — creating a hub for community that feels authentic to the city and will only get better with age.
