Gregor Hildebrandt Transforms Perrotin Into an Imaginary Forest Made of Vinyl and Cassette Tapes
The artist’s first solo exhibition in mainland China.
While nearly all of us use vinyl records for listening purposes, Gregor Hildebrandt transforms these objects, along with various near-obsolete recording media, into works of art. For the first time, the German conceptual artist is showcasing a solo exhibition of work in mainland China.
Housed at Perrotin’s Shanghai location, Wo du mich liebst beginnt der Wald, translated as Where You Love Me Begins the Forest presents a series of new paintings and totemic sculptures that are made as a “memorial” to the different songs that are important to the artist. The title of the exhibition takes its name from the song “Dolores” by German band Anne, released through Grzegorzki Records — a music label founded by Hildebrandt and fellow artist Alicja Kwade in 2011.
Hidden behind a labyrinth of sculptures are intricate canvas paintings made using cassette tapes and cut records. “Whilst words and notes are impossible without rules and standards, art remains open to greater possibilities,” said renowned lyricist and musician, Chien Yao. “Gregor Hildebrandt testifies this belief perfectly. Even though physical music belongs to the days of yore, he still insists upon revealing the value of its material form and, through artistic metamorphosis, touches the heart,” Yao added.
Wo du mich liebst beginnt der Wald (Where You Love Me Begins the Forest) is on view at Perrotin Shanghai until September 10.
