Unit London Explores Semiotics in New Group Exhibition

Featuring work from Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha, Hank Willis Thomas and more.

Signs and symbols are everywhere around us — from the way-finding on the streets, to the clothes we wear, to the playlists we curate. Whether true or not, we as consumers, buy into the lifestyles we seek to the project — offering clues into our personality and the way we see the world.

Semiotics, or the study of signs, is an interesting discourse that investigates the various codes that are riddled across society and the theme of a new group exhibition at Unit London. Instead of approaching language as a means to describe art, the show presents language as art itself.

Mapped across a multi-disciplinary offering of work, Sign Systems comprises of a list of prominent and emerging artists, including Ed Ruscha, Hank Willis Thomas, Jenny Holzer, Sam Durant and more. By encouraging viewers to see text as not separate from the image but along equal modes of interpretation, the show seeks to dismantle the various codes that are unconsciously used to describe the world.

Sign Systems is on view at Unit London until August 6.

Elsewhere, Kerstin Brätsch presents Die Sein: Para Psychics II.
