Katherine Bernhardt Transforms David Zwirner London Into a Universe of Color

Her first solo exhibition with the gallery is on view until July 29.

You can always expect an explosion of symbols and color when viewing the work of Katherine Bernhardt. As one of the most recent artist acquisitions to the David Zwirner lineup, the St.Louis-based artist has unveiled her first solo exhibition at the gallery’s London location.

Why is a mushroom growing in my shower? presents some of Bernhardt’s largest paintings to date, characteristically blending her own life with visual ephemera found across society. As the title of the show implies, the show makes an ode to the mushrooms irreverent cultural status, along with showcasing a range of lo-fi depictions of characters seen across The Simpsons, Garfield, Pink Panther, along with a particular fascination with Crocs.

“Bernhardt has shown herself to be an entirely unique painter of our times chronicling her life and the larger culture through a daring painterly technique and an expansive sense of form and space,” said art critic, Nicole Rudick.

The exhibition is approaching its final few weeks and will be on view at David Zwirner London until July 29.

Elsewhere, Jen Mann presents Other Sister at Arsenal Contemporary.
