HVW8 Presents 'HOLLYWOOD BABYLON'

A joint exhibition of work by Cali Thornhill DeWitt and Kosuke Kawamura.

Following his recent exhibition at HVW8 Berlin, Cali Thornhill DeWitt is collaborating with Kosuke Kawamura on a new group show, titled HOLLYWOOD BABYLON, at the gallery’s Los Angeles location. This is the second time the two artist’s have joined forces, having first done so earlier this spring in The Evil That Pursues Me Is The Same Evil That Pursues You at S01 in Tokyo.

The latest body of work is entirely made up of posters inspired by the methodology found in punk and early hip-hop culture. Kawamura blended his signature “shredding” collage technique with DeWitt’s text-based meditations to create dark monochromatic reflections on iconic and tragic celebrities.

HOLLYWOOD BABYLON directly references Kenneth Anger’s 1975 book of the same name, in which the author revealed the dark secrets of Hollywood and the film industry. In the exhibition, DeWitt and Kawamura continue the book’s original narrative by including more contemporary figures who have fallen out of the limelight due to crime or tragedy, in an attempt to reevaluate the attention and adoration society places on celebrity.

The exhibition is on view at HVW8 LA until August 21.
