Lawrence Weiner’s ‘OUT OF SIGHT’ Installation Is Being Exhibited at the Entrance of Art Basel

An interactive sculpture that invites people of all ages a space for self-discovery.

In 2016, American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner created an interactive children’s game called OUT OF SIGHT. Simple, yet thought-provoking, the social sculpture was similar to a game of hopscotch, or “marelle” in French, in that the artwork uses a combination of wit and language-based graphics to engage the public in a game of chance and movement.

In conjunction with the ongoing Art Basel fair in Switzerland, Marian Goodman Gallery presents OUT OF SIGHT in its largest iteration to date. Featured for the first time in French, English and German, visitors are provided a freeing space that allows the imagination to ruminate from one aspiration to another.

Weiner, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 79, once said that any person can come play the game with “whatever situation they find it, young, old or indifferent, the minute they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, will be able to stand still and realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that’s assuming a position.”

For one of the world’s premier art festivals, OUT OF SIGHT offers a metaphorical break for self-discovery and empowerment. The installation, along with the rest of Art Basel, will be on view in Switzerland until June 19.
