James Turrell Debuts 'Green Mountain Falls Skyspace' in Colorado

Accessed via several hiking trails.

Scattered throughout the world — from Pomona College in Claremont, California to Israel Museum in Jerusalem — are more than 80 Skyspaces designed by American light artist James Turrell featuring ceiling apertures in which visitors can observe changes in the sky from dawn to dusk. The immersive installations serve as a place to establish a deeper connection with nature and as meditative and euphoric spaces that illustrate how we internally create the colors we see.

The latest Green Mountain Falls Skyspace is nestled in a mountain among the vast expanse of pine trees near Pikes Peak, Colorado. To access the space, visitors embark on a half-mile uphill hike which was specifically blazed for the project. The chamber stands 18 feet tall and is one of the few Skyspaces which feature a retractable roof, allowing for special light shows outside of the sunrise and sunset viewing times. Stones, pine wood, and the finishing of the structure were locally sourced to complement the natural surroundings.

The Green Mountain Falls Skyspace will open for viewing from July 5 to September 30, and tickets are now available at the Green Box Arts website. Take a look at the introductory video below for more details.
