Albert Oehlen Brought His Ultra-Caffeinated “Cofftea” Beverage to Frieze New York

“A drink that will never let you sleep again.”

With so much happening at Frieze New York, it’s easy to feel tired. Luckily, artist Albert Oehlen is showcasing a vending machine offering his unique Cofftea beverage, which as the name implies, is made of coffee and tea.

Produced in collaboration with Aqua Monaco, the vending machine is housed at the Gagosian’s booth, where the German artist is also exhibiting several large-scale paintings. Similar to the canvas-based works on the wall, Oehlen states the concept behind the drink is an overall commentary on “commercialism” — as is present through the many toilet paper, detergent and beer ads present in the paintings.

Frieze marks the first time Oehlen’s vending machine has touched down in the US, having appeared several times across Europe. HypeArt hasn’t tried the drink yet, but according to Aqua Monaco’s website, Cofftea “will never let you sleep again.” The Cofftea bottle features a drawing by the German artist and is free to try out via a token handed out by representatives of the Gagosian. Frieze New York is currently in its third day and will end on Sunday, May 22.

In related news, we compiled a shortlist of must-see solo exhibitions to see at the fair.
