Triennale Honors Giovanni Gastel in Two Concurrent Exhibitions

Both are on view in Milan until March 13, 2022.

It’s been roughly a year since Giovanni Gastel passed away due to complications with COVID. To honor the late-Italian photographer, Triennale di Milano is showcasing two exhibitions chronicling Gastel’s expansive oeuvre.

The first, “The People I Like,” is in collaboration with MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts and presents over 200 portraits that span the worlds of culture, design, art, fashion, music, entertainment, and politics. Curated by Uberto Frigerio with exhibition design by Lissoni Associati, the show brings together a collective portrait of souls encountered during the course of Gastel’s 40-year career.

Happening at the same time is another show titled “Jewels of Fantasy,” where some of Gastel’s earliest and most intimate shots are put on display. Made in conjunction with Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, it was during this time, from the 1980s-90s, that Gastel would be at the forefront of the fashion world shooting some of the premier brands, including Missoni, Swarovski and Salvatore Ferragamo.

“The People I Like” and “Jewels of Fantasy” is on view at Triennale di Milano until March 13, 2022.

Also on view at Triennale, Raymond Depardon is showcasing his largest solo show to date.
