Library Street Collective Presents "Asymmetry"

A joint exhibition between Jacqueline Surdell and Robert Moreland.

In addition to helping construct a new arts campus in Detroit, Library Street Collective just opened a new joint exhibition featuring the work of Robert Moreland and Jacqueline Surdell. “Asymmetry” presents an alluring synergy between two new bodies of work that appear radically different but relate in universally complementary ways.

Immediately, Surdell’s mythic textiles provide an enchanting entrance into the exhibition. Made through a labor-intensive process that accentuates repetition, color, and shape, the Chicago-based artist questions what can be created with a focus on these formal elements. The resulting pieces feel both sacred and modern — an amalgamation of color and line, connecting and disconnecting through a calming undulation.

Although conceptually similar, Moreland takes a far different approach to shape, color, and form. His flattened canvases are hand-made with leather hinges and metal tracks that the Los Angeles-based artist uses to add a layer of mystery to his flattened 3D compositions.

When viewed together, a thought-provoking dialogue emerges between the simplicity of Moreland’s art and the complexity of Surdell’s textiles. “Asymmetry” is on view at Library Street Collective until May 4, 2022.
