Jong Won Rhee’s New Book Captures the Beauty in South Korea’s Unadorned Fringes

‘Solitudes of Human Places’ is published by Edition Patrick Frey.

Jong Won Rhee is a Korean photographer who places special emphasis on the unadorned fringes of his native country. In conjunction with publisher Edition Patrick Frey, the two have released a new art book, titled Solitudes of Human Places.

As evident in the cover image, Rhee’s subjects are typically turning away from the camera or in upon themselves. Although the scenes are ordinary and unassuming, there lies a gloom that drifts from each photograph to the next. “These images of South Korea’s plain and unadorned fringes peer into the depths of human solitude,” said the photographer in a statement, adding, “They imagine people’s unconscious striving to come to terms with their loneliness by facing up to the human condition squarely, steadfastly, serenely.”

Having grown up across the world in South Korea, the US, Italy and Australia, Rhee studied industrial design at London’s Central Saint Martins and automotive design at Coventry University. He now fully devotes himself to the field of photography, which he described as a special experience in which you aim “to capture that fleeting moment of emotions flowing through you without fully understanding them.”

Solitudes of Human Places is a hardcover title that spans 144 pages in length. The book is available to purchase for roughly $65 USD at Edition Patrick Frey and select bookstores worldwide.
