Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork Presents "Solutions to Common Noise Problems"

On view at François Ghebaly New York until March 5.

Tomorrow is the last day to see Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork’s alluring exhibition, “Solutions to Common Noise Problems.” Housed at François Ghebaly’s new gallery in the Lower East Side, a passerby would be forgiven to think that the work on display was sourced from a thrift shop.

Once inside, you begin to see that the jackets are in fact much larger than a common garment and are actually sculptures that are meticulously crafted with sonically functional materials like vinyl sheeting, acoustic foam, air blowers, and felted wool. Each artwork is part of Kiyomi Gork’s Sound Blanket series and is carefully placed around the space with several microphones and speakers hanging overhead.

As visitors walk through the space, the mics pick up various noises, from the shuffling of feet to the clearing of a throat, that is recalibrated in the gallery through custom software. Kiyomi Gork uses the thick felted material to capture and dampen sound waves, protecting the listener from unwanted acoustics in the environment.

Similar to a building, Kiyomi Gork’s oversized garments are crafted to resemble an architecture of sorts that serves multiple symbolic and functional purposes. As a whole, the installation holds up a warped sonic mirror to the visitor, offering woolen comfort within a wash of partial, ghostly reverberations of the self. “Solutions to Common Noise Problems” ends tomorrow, March 5, at François Ghebaly in New York.
