Hauser & Wirth Dives Into the Artistic Crossover Between Max Bill and Georges Vantongerloo

The exhibition is currently on view in New York until March 26, 2022.

The alluring exhibition “Crossover,” between Swiss artist Max Bill and Belgian artist Georges Vantongerloo, is currently in its final weeks at Hauser & Wirth’s 69th Street location in New York. The showcase seeks to spotlight the lifelong friendship between the two creative polymaths through a selection of paintings and sculptures, some of which are being shown for the first time in the United States since the 1970s.

Artist, architect, designer, sculptor, teacher — some of the many disciplines Bill dabbled in throughout his prolific career. Although he considered himself an architect first and foremost, perhaps ‘visual explorer’ would be the best term to categorize his work.

As a member of the De Stijl group, alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, Vantongerloo experimented across abstract linear and geometric studies which would manifest in a number of series, including his famous Construction within a Sphere.

“Crossover” is curated by Bill’s widow, Dr. Angela Thomas Schmid, who sought to hone in on the numerous connections and exchanges two artists had within the American art scene, along with their lasting impact on movements like Minimalism and Concrete Art. The exhibition is on view at Hauser & Wirth New York until March 26, 2022.

Elsewhere, the Venice Biennale ensures that Ukraine will still be represented at the upcoming fair.
