Skarstedt Presents a New Exhibition on Andy Warhol

Examining the artist’s curiosity with money, religion, death and violence.

Skarstedt Gallery unveiled a new exhibition of works by the legendary visual artist Andy Warhol. The eponymously titled show hones in on Warhol’s thematic curiosities, particularly when it relates to money, religion, portraits, death, and violence.

Emblematic of his oeuvre is an obsessive examination of common objects and pop cultural icons and phenomena. Following Warhol’s Death and Disasters series from the 1960s, which prominently featured an electric chair in an array of colors, the artist began to examine more common items that equally hold the potential for danger. Peruse the gallery to find silkscreened kitchen knives adjacent to money and a cross — a dialogue that opens the conversation to the way religion, commerce and violence can at times be interconnected.

Further into the show and you can find Warhol’s signature Marilyn Monroe studies, in this case, her face now dark with shadows that contrast with the electric colors that punch through. “Andy Warhol” covers two decades of the artist’s prolific career and is on view at Skarstedt Gallery in New York until April 2, 2022.

Also on view, Michael Werner presents a comprehensive look at the art of A.R. Penck.
