Robert Nava Explores Tension and Harmony in "Bloodsport"

Opening soon at Los Angeles’ Night Gallery.

Night Gallery is getting ready to play host to a suite of new paper-based work by Indiana-born, Brooklyn-based artist, Robert Nava. As his second solo show with the gallery, “Bloodsport” shifts from expansive landscapes to Nava’s trademark amorphosized figures.

Using a variety of tools, from acrylic and oil stick, to graphite and spray paint, each layer acts as a dialouge between the artist and the unknown. By obsessively drawing, Nava allows his unconscious to take over in gestural marks that manifest as four-legged sharks and fire-breathing tigers, to winged rabbits. According to a statement by Night Gallery, the artist uses these devices to explore tension and harmony, balance and unpredictability, instinct and intention.

Amidst the dualities of thought lies an adventure that the artist revelled in when creating the new body of work. Catch “Bloodsport” as it goes on view at Night Gallery from February 19 to March 26, 2022.
