James Turrell Meets Ad Reinhardt in "Color Out of Darkness"

An immersive new exhibition on view at Pace Gallery’s New York flagship.

For those of you in New York, today Pace Gallery unveiled an alluring new exhibition featuring the work of Ad Reinhardt’s paintings illuminated by a lighting concept conceived by James Turrell.

Known globally for his intricate site-specific installations that explore light and space, Turrell includes his new Wedgework installation titled After Effect (2021) on the first floor, which sets the stage for Reinhardt’s deceptively complex color studies just above. Over the course of his career, Turrell’s practice has been greatly influenced by Reinhardt’s work, in particular his “red,” “blue,” “white,” and “black” paintings, making the joint exhibition all the more unique.

Housed at Pace’ New York flagship, at the core of the show is a focus on how both artists explore the decentralization of the object in their practices. Leonardo da Vinci’s description of the sfumato technique relates to the exhibition’s focus on perceptual experiences of light and shadow in works by Turrell and Reinhardt. The Renaissance master once said that sfumato is “without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane.” Pace’s exhibition will draw connections between works by Turrell, a key figure of the Light and Space movement, and Reinhardt, who pushed abstraction and monochromatism in painting to new frontiers during his lifetime.

To complement the show, Pace Publishing will release a new book documenting the unique pairing. “Color Out of Darkness” is on view in New York until March 19, 2022.

Also on view, Desert X AlUla is a mythic art experience in an ancient Saudi desert.
