Anicka Yi to Showcase “Metaspore” at Pirelli HangarBicocca

Where bacteria, tempura-fried flowers and glycerin are used to create sculptural artwork.

No material or substance is off-limits for Korean artist, Anicka Yi. From tempura-fried flowers, to algae and glycerin, Yi uses these biological and perishable materials as a way to create work that subverts the concepts of natural and synthetic.

Later this month, Yi will open a new exhibition, dubbed “Metaspore” at Milan’s Pirelli HangarBicocca. As her first solo showing in an Italian institution, she presents over 20 works from the past decade that will go on display together with the production of a new expanded version of the artwork Biologizing the Machine (terra incognita) — which exhibited at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. The work explores concepts such as ecosystem and interdependency, introducing visitors to key aspects of her poetics.

At the core of Yi’s practice is an investigation of new possibilities for interaction and communication between living organisms and artificial intelligence systems. Get ready to be enthralled when “Metaspore” opens on February 24 at Pirelli HangarBicocca.
