V1 Gallery and Barry McGee Are Back With a New Book

‘Tis the season.

Holiday shopping can often incite a frenzy. ‘Will this fit?’ Will they like it? Will I like it? Can I even afford it?’ The very thought can cause vertigo. Alas, books have shown time after time to be an excellent gift for any and all types. There are loads of good ones to choose from this season, from ILL-STUDIO and Slam Jam’s ADDPMP [501–999], Quilo, a new book-mag exploring Brazilian writing and photography, along with a publication by NSS exploring football and fashion through a bootleg lens.

If your loved one happens to be a Barry McGee fan, even better. To complement aperture’s exploration into the San Francisco-based artist’s lesser-known photography, V1 Gallery has published its own publication in collaboration with McGee.

Entitled This Harsh Reality, the book is a visual archive of images that are emblematic in the way the artist composes his paintings and installations. Similar to the aperture book, This Harsh Reality places emphasis on how photography informs McGee’s daily practice — from the characters and objects that populate his canvases to the street scenes he captures in his local community and around the world.

This Harsh Reality is an edition of 1,000 and is offset printed in Denmark on Munken Lynx rough paper. The book marks the fourth collaboration between two and is available to purchase for €40 EUR / $42 USD.
