Brazil’s President-Elect Will Reinstate Ministry of Culture Dissolved by Bolsonaro

As well as appointing Bahian singer Margareth Menezes to lead the department.

Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will reinstate the nation’s ministry of culture largely disbanded by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula, as the president is commonly referred to as, plans to appoint Brazilian singer Margareth Menezes, who founded the nonprofit Associação Fábrica Cultural, which has amplified culture, business and educational opportunities for marginalized communities for over 20 years.

Menezes was born in Salvador, Bahia and first rose to prominence as a singer in the late 1980s to ’90s. She will be the second musician appointed by Lula to lead the culture ministry, having appointed legendary Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil for both of his terms as president from 2003 to 2010.

The Bahian singer is expected to be in attendance as Lula is inaugurated as Brazilian president on January 1, 2023.
