Hirshhorn Museum and Albright-Knox Purchased One of Yayoi Kusama’s Fabled ‘Infinity Mirrors’

A landmark joint acquisition that will first go on view in Washington D.C. this spring.

In a landmark joint acquisition, Washington D.C.’s Hirshhorn Museum and Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced the purchase of Yayoi Kusama‘s Infinity Mirrored Room—My Heart Is Dancing into the Universe (2018).

The artwork will soon make its East Coast debut as part of the upcoming exhibition “One with Eternity: Yayoi Kusama in the Hirshhorn Collection” which opens at the Hirshhorn this spring. Amongst her ethereal work, the Infinity Mirrors series has captivated audiences from around the world since first debuting in 1965.

Infinity Mirrored Room—My Heart Is Dancing into the Universe continues Kusama’s unique investigation into time and space. Each side of the installation is mounted with reflective surfaces that are filled with colorfully lit paper lanterns and the artist’s trademark polka dots. As visitors walk through the darkened room, the colors of the lantern slowly change and emit a reflection that is absorbed into the seemingly endless kaleidoscope.

Following the show at the Hirshhorn, the artwork will go on display in Buffalo in the years following the completion of the Albright-Knox’s campus expansion and development project designed by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA. The reopened museum will then be known as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
