Google Doodle Debuts Latest Design in Admiration of Katarzyna Kobro

Celebrating the 124th birthday of the late Polish sculptor.

Google Doodle released a new design to celebrate the 124th birthday of the late Polish sculptor Katarzyna Kobro. The Moscow-born artist took the art world by storm as she shaped up works of art that incorporated architecture and scientific discoveries.

The search engine’s art platform wished to shed light on Kobro’s life’s work by forming the letters of “Google” employing her known sculptures with minor modifications to properly visualize the name. Pieces from series such as the “Rzeźba Abstrakcyjna (2)” (“Abstract Sculpture (2)”) and “Kompozycja Przestrzenna” (“Spatial Compositions”) were utilized to form each letter.

Back in 1920, Kobro made her first sculpture dubbed as the TOS 75 – struktura which she used cork and metal to form an abstract geometric construction with vivid primary colors that seemed to be ahead of its time. Five years after, she cemented her name as a modern artist with her “Kompozycja Przestrzenna” series which encapsulates the same aura of one singular object assembled with a mix and match of shapes exploring vast open spaces.

She continued to solidify her creative perspectives by consigning the publication of The Dimensionist Manifesto to further the aspect of broadening the search for new realms within art similar to scientific discoveries. Though Kobro passed away in 1951, her art has been residing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
