A New Van Gogh Drawing Has Been Discovered in Amsterdam

It’s not every day that a new artwork emerges from a man who lived over 100 years ago.

Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum has attributed a new artwork to the catalog of the impressionist master. The work is a drawing that depicts a man who is hunched over in what appears to be utter exhaustion. The sketch, which dates back to 1882, is undoubtedly similar to several other works, such as Worn Out, that was made by Van Gogh during the era in which he lived in The Hague.

The announcement came via a press conference, in which Teio Meedendorp, a senior researcher at the museum stated, “In stylistic terms, it fits perfectly with the many figure studies we know from Van Gogh’s time in The Hague, and the connection with Worn Out is obvious.”

The latest edition to Van Gogh’s catalog is being called Study for ‘Worn Out’ and was in the possession of a private Dutch collection since the early 1900s. Despite the angst that the old man must have felt in the moment, Van Gogh saw the scene as an interesting artistic moment. He penned a letter to his brother Teo on November 24, 1882, stating, “What a fine sight an old working man makes, in his patched bombazine suit with his bald head.”

The sketch is now on view alongside Worn Out at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
