Step Into teamlab’s Interactive Garden Installation
A dynamic body of work on view at Tokyo’s teamLab Planets.
teamLab has become world-renowned in its ability to create enthralling visual installations that utilize the latest in technological advancements. The Japanese art collective typically recreates nature through immersive LED displays, however, for their latest project, they have turned to nature itself by incorporating 13,000 living orchids in an expansive space at Tokyo’s teamLab Planets.
In “Floating Flower Garden; Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One,” the art collective created a three-dimensional mass of flowers that subtly interact with the viewers passing by. The group chose orchids for their unique ability to grow without soil. By using concealed wires, the flowers appear to float in the air for an ethereal experience.
Similar to teamLab’s digitally interactive displays, the flowers are complemented by a host of technologies that mirror your movement through hidden sensors. “The garden starts to make a space for humans… But they are moving super slowly, so you have to adjust your time to the garden’s,” explained Takeshi Kudo, communications director at teamLab.
This dynamic creates a unique interaction between the flowers and the viewer, where “the boundary between the body and the artwork dissolves,” according to a statement on the art collective’s website. “Floating Flower Garden; Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One” will be on view at teamLab Planets until the end of 2022.
Elsewhere in art, Performa 2021 will be free to the public for the first time in its 16-year history.
