Marsha Reid’s "Monumental Tour" Is Hitting the Streets of Philadelphia

An array of touring sculptures at four different locations until January 31.

Marsha Reid started Kindred Arts as a cultural equity initiative to spark civic dialogue. Inspired while working at the Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Reid sought to address the cultural disparities between Midtown and the Harlem neighborhood she raised her family The result is a mobile museum that brings various sculptures and installations to the public sphere.

Having recently stopped in Oakland, the not-profit is bringing its Monumental Tour to four different locations in Philadelphia. The sculptural works comment on a number of harrowing topics, from colonization, privilege, and oppression, to Black pride, power and subjugation. The artist list for the tour includes Arthur Jafa, Coby Kennedy, Christopher Myers, and Hank Willis Thomas.

No stranger to public events, Reid is aware of the power that art holds when it is free from the walls of institutions that have a history of exclusionary practices. The work on display is an open letter to people of all backgrounds to learn and connect with the African-American experience. Monumental Tour will be on view in the streets of Philly until January 31.

Also on view, Simon Demeuter has opened “ROMA 1997” at L21.
