There Is an Incredible Car Show on View at a Former 19th Century Church

From a ‘64 Chevy Impala piñata by Justin Favela to Richard Prince’ fiberglass hood studies.

The Church in Sag Harbor is hosting its most ambitious show to date. Entitled “Road Rage,” the exhibition features a grandiose display of artwork and installations by Ed Ruscha, Mary Heilmann, Justin Favela, Henry Taylor, Liz Cohen and more.

“Road Rage” centers around the car art of the past century — with special emphasis on how artists were amused, aggravated, entranced and inspired by the automobile and its transformation as a tool of travel into a reflection on society as a whole. Examples can be seen in Henry Taylor’s haunting painting of the gaze of a stranger from a passing car — Richard Prince’ Fiberglass Hood studies — or a brilliant ‘64 Chevy Impala piñata by Justin Favela.

“The wonderful work and brilliant artistry in Road Rage is disarming, attractive, funny, and dynamic. Anyone who has been in a car, wanted a car, made out in a car, hated a car or lives for cars is going to be blown away by the expressive wealth of work in this show,” said Eric Fischl, who with April Gornick, repurposed and restored the 19th-century Methodist church into the art space it is today.

“Road Rage” is on display until September 20 at Sag Harbor’s The Church.

Also on view, Otani Workshop has unveiled a new show at Perrotin Shanghai.
