Hauser & Wirth Unveils Debut Show On The Late-Gustav Metzger

The museum’s first retrospective on the visionary artist.

Hauser & Wirth has unveiled its first retrospective exhibition on the late-artist, Gustav Metzger. Set in its Somerset location, the show specifically focuses on Metzger’s six-decade career at the intersection of human intervention, nature and manmade environments. A key feature that will surely delight viewers is the immersive Liquid Crystal Environment (1965/2021), a colorful example of Metzger’s Auto-Creative Art of the late-20th Century.

Born in the former Weimar Republic, Metzger carried on a lifelong commitment against environmental destruction and the role in which art making can be used as a vessel for change. In effect, his work became a constant dialogue between the duality of creation and destruction, which can be viewed upon his chaotic brushstrokes and alluring large-scale installations.

In a 2016 conversation with Modern Art Oxford’s Emma Ridgway, Metzger stated, “We are desperately in need of warmth as a fundamental element in human interactions. With Liquid Crystal it is physically based on warmth, it is based on the transformation of one level of warmth to another. This dialectic is central to the experience.” An experience that is surely much needed after the long confines of this pandemic.

Gustav Metzger’s exhibition at Hauser & Wirth runs until September 12.
