Yayoi Kusama’s Whimsical 'Cosmic Nature' Exhibition Opens at the New York Botanical Garden

Touching on her inspiration and connection to nature.

Contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has crafted an exhibition titled Kusama: Cosmic Nature at the New York Botanical Garden, touching on her inspiration and connection to nature.

The vibrant exhibition features monumental floral sculptures and immersive works that dot the garden’s 250 acres. Installations include the Narcissus Garden situated in the Native Plant Garden, and the Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees, with nearby trees adorned with the artist’s speckled motif.

The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will host a seasonal progressions of violas, salvias, zinnias, chrysanthemums and other colorful annuals alongside Kusama’s polka-dotted sculptures, including Hymn of Life—Tulips, which is nestled in the Conservatory Courtyard Hardy Pool. The captivating Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity is on display in the Visitor Center gallery.

New sculptures, including Dancing Pumpkin and I Want to Fly to the Universe, will make their debut at the exhibition, which runs from April 10 to October 31. There will also be a new Infinity Mirrored Room experience opening this summer.

Reservations are required and tickets can be purchased through the New York Botanical Garden website.

Last month, several rare early artworks by Kusama that were never exhibited to the public were put up for sale.
