Derrick Adams' "The Last Resort" Exhibition Opens at Chicago's Rhona Hoffman Gallery
The culmination of Adams’ “Floater” series, “The Last Resort” offers a colorful exploration of Black leisure.

Baltimore-born, Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams has teamed with Chicago’s Rhona Hoffman Gallery to present his new “The Last Resort” exhibition. Marking Adams’ fourth show at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, “The Last Resort” offers a colorful exploration of Black leisure and completes Adams’ Floater series, an initiative he began in 2015.
Consisting of paintings and watercolors, a handful of which can be seen above, “The Last Resort” “renew[s] Adams’ signature use of exuberant color blocking figuration to introduce the idle time of Black bodies in compositions that are joyous, abundant, and radical in their refusal of tragedy,” according to a press release from the Rhona Hoffman Gallery. Each piece shows either families or individuals enjoying a leisurely, carefree dip in a pool, often accompanied by large floating toys that range from flamingos to swans — even a unicorn with a gold tooth and large gold necklace slung around its neck. The show’s title draws from an eponymous artist retreat Adams has founded in his native Baltimore that’s set to open in 2022.
“The Last Resort” will be on display at Rhona Hoffman Gallery until March 27. Due to the coronavirus, individuals who wish to view the works will have to set an appointment on the gallery’s website.
Elsewhere in the art world, Takashi Murakami has curated a “Healing” exhibition at Perrotin Shanghai that showcases works from various Kaikai Kiki artists.
