de Young Museum to Host Monumental "Calder-Picasso" Exhibition
Exploring the relationship between the iconic 20th century artists.

The de Ypung Museum in San Francisco is gearing up to launch a momentous exhibition that explores the relationship between two of the most influential artists of the 20th century: Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. Conceived by the artists’ grandsons, the sprawling presentation entitled “Calder-Picasso” will display over 100 paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs from the mid-1920s to the early 1970s.
“Calder-Picasso provides an in-depth investigation of the relationship between two of the most influential artists of the 20th century,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “We are delighted to share this fascinating exhibition with audiences on the West Coast. It reaffirms the revolutionary impact of their work as each grappled with the representation of form, space, and time in art—and in doing so, redefined the conception of art itself.”
The exhibition explores the artists’ distinct approaches to form, abstraction and figuration. Moreover, the show will highlight their shared exploration of ” the void, or the absence of space, which they defined from the figure through to abstraction.” Calder’s groundbreaking mobiles, sculptures, paintings and drawings will be juxtaposed with major works by Picasso, drawn largely from the extensive holdings of the Calder Foundation, Musée national Picasso-Paris.
Check out select works in the slideshow above and then visit the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s website to learn more. “Calder-Picasso” will run from February 27 until May 23, 2021.
Elsewhere in art, a massive David Hockney artwork is going up for auction at Sotheby’s London.
