Noguchi Museum Features Introspective Work by Objects of Common Interest
A new sculptural display on view until February 13, 2022.
The Isamu Noguchi Foundation has worked with Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis of the Athens-and New York-based studio, Objects of Common Interest, on a sculptural exhibition titled, “Hard, Soft, and All Lit Up with Nowhere to Go.”
Art is an act,” Noguchi once stated in an interview with The League Quarterly. “The act of creating a fundamental form, though it may be disciplined by the fundamental nature of the object desired, is not designing in the accepted sense.” A master of abstraction, Noguchi interspersed these two often-disparate disciplines — whether he was designing a table or a sculpture — to create objects that invited boundless introspection.
A constant traveler throughout his life, Noguchi had a particular affinity for Greece, a place he once described as his “intellectual home.” Similarly, Objects of Common Interest give an equal weight to form and abstraction as it does to function. The exhibition features several of these artworks throughout the Noguchi Museum’s garden and permanent installation, such as towering light tubes that mimic the curvatures of nature, along with totemic sculptures that float between abstraction and figuration.
“Hard, Soft, and All Lit Up with Nowhere to Go” is on view until February 13, 2022.
