Step Into Nicolas Party's Hypnotic Universe

“Rovine” is on view at MASI Lugano until January 9, 2022.

The Museo d’arte della Svizzera Italiana (MASI Lugano) is showcasing a new body of work by Swiss-born, New York-based artist, Nicolas Party.

“Rovine” (Ruins) is the artist’s first monographic museum show in Europe and it surely is one you won’t forget. Similar to a recent exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, Party has created a series of works that play along with the architecture of the space itself. Polychrome marble trompe l’oeil decorations and elongated arches, boldly contrasting color palettes to the magnetic artwork on the walls — a universe that is hard to step out of.

Divided into five distinct environments, the artist revisits several themes he’s worked on in the past: still life, portraits, and natural landscapes. Party’s oeuvre demonstrates a mastery of not just painting, but of the art of presentation — and how that can further spark dialogue within the viewer. “Rovine” is on view at MASI Lugano until January 9, 2022.

Also on view, “Concrete Column” explores Wolfgang Tillmans boundless curiosity.
