Japanese Photographer Eikoh Hosoe's Latest Publication Is a Full Volume of His Life's Work

A prominent multi-hyphenate who shaped new angles of post-war photography through various mediums.

The UK-based publishing company, MACK, will be sealing the body-of-work of Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe in a comprehensive volume.

Known as one of the most prominent creative multi-hyphenates from Japan, Hosoe paved the way for presenting post-war Japanese photography in a new light through various mediums such as performance, literature, art, and more. Aside from establishing himself as an image-maker for a variety of matters that challenge a human’s psyche since the 1950s, the 88-year-old creative brought forth the works of iconic European and American photographers to the Land of the Rising Sun in 1968 and became a teacher who introduced the crafts of a number of fellow photographers including Daido Moriyama.

Hosoe’s accomplishments don’t end there as he co-founded the photographic cooperative Vivo, was part of a joint effort in formulating an influential lens-based art journal, established an educational curriculum for universities, held exhibitions and published a great number of books and catalogs of his own work.

The latest publication is a full end-to-end volume which will be looked to as the primary reference for everything Hosoe which is also designed, edited and produced under his leadership along with the aid of the globally reputable curator and scholar Yasufumi Nakamori. Aside from a series of his major photographs, the book unveils collaborations done with writers, dancers and artists namely Yayoi Kusama with the inclusion of essays projecting a new outlook on his life’s work as well as a curation of other writings published before by a slew of Japanese writers.
