Virgil Abloh’s “Figures of Speech” Will Open in Qatar Next Month

The first Middle East exhibition by the American artist and designer.

Qatar Museums will present a mid-career retrospective on the acclaimed American artist and designer, Virgil Abloh. As part of his ongoing “Figures of Speech” tour, the exhibition is Abloh’s first in the Middle East and has been specially designed to work with the spaces at the Garage Gallery at the Fire Station.

First organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, “Figures of Speech” highlights Abloh’s far-reaching interests across art and design, to music, fashion, and architecture. The exhibition first toured at the MCA Chicago, High Museum of Art in Atlanta and most recently the ICA Boston.

In regards to the latest stop, her excellency, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani — chairperson to Qatar Museums and sister to the current ruler of the country — said in a past statement, “We believe that people in Qatar and throughout the Gulf will be enthralled by this introduction to the visionary, barrier-defying work of artist and designer Virgil Abloh.”

The exhibition will coincide with the week-long event, Qatar Creates: Fashion and Design, which will bring together creatives from around the world for a celebration of local and regional work. “With both the exhibition and the event, Qatar Museums is carrying forward its commitment to nurturing artistic talent, opening career opportunities, and offering inspiration to our audiences,” she added.

The latest “Figures of Speech” will also present an extensive program of workshops and talks to complement the show. The exhibition will be on view at Garage Gallery at the Fire Station in Qatar from November 5 to March 31, 2022.
