A Rare Andy Warhol Silkscreen of Jean-Michel Basquiat Will Hit Auction This November

The portrait is expected to fetch around $20m USD.

Christie’s recently auctioned off a set of doodle drawings by entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuk and has an upcoming sale in conjunction with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The global auctioneer will introduce another interesting addition when a rare Andy Warhol silkscreen portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat hits the market with an estimated worth of $20m USD.

Jean-Michel Basquiat belongs to avid art collect, Peter Brant, who acquired the work nearly 20 years ago from New York’s Tony Shafrazi gallery. The portrait was created in 1982, perhaps the twilight of Warhol’s career, but just the start of Basquiat’s short yet prolific imprint. The artwork sizes at 40 by 40 inches and features Basquiat face silkscreened with black ink on a metallic orange background with silver splatters made using an oxidation technique that Warhol developed in the late 1970s.

Christie’s chairman of 20th and 21st Century art, Alex Rotter, commended Warhol’s ability to forsee Basquiat’s potential long before others. “His unmatched ability to capture celebrity, fame, glory, and tragedy culminates in this portrait,” Rotter added in a statement.

The Basquiat portrait will be on view at Christie’s Hong Kong later this week, before touring in Los Angeles and finally hitting auction in New York on November 11.
