Tina Kim Gallery Honors the Late Artist Kim Tschang-Yeul in New Exhibition

A seminal figure in the history of modern Korean art.

New York’s Tina Kim Gallery has unveiled the second solo exhibition by the late Korean artist, Kim Tschang-Yeul. As the first highlighted his work from the 1960s to 1980s, the latest show, entitled “The Stillness of Water,” continues in a chronological trajectory, focusing on Kim’s experimental work of the ’80s and ’90s.

Born in North Korea, Kim was a key member of Korean avant-garde who bridged the gap between Western European art traditions and his East Asian roots. Central to his artistic practice was a fervent study of the water drop. “To paint water drops is to erase all memories, all evils, and the anguish [to be] destroyed with water,” said the artist in a past statement.

In this period of work, Kim disrupts his trompe l’oeil with raw brushstrokes and subtle airbrush swatches to create a scene that represents the confluence of spirituality and the impermanence of the physical world.

Following the exhibition, the gallery will work in conjunction with Cecil Studio on a monograph honoring the life of Kim, who passed away earlier this year. “The Stillness of Water” is on view until October 16.
