Todd James Unveils Sinister and Suggestive Paintings for "The Intrepid" Exhibition

Colorful still lifes that explore consumer-society dilemmas.

Following his “Warm Welcome” exhibition at Copenhagen’s Eighteen Gallery, Todd James returns with a colorful new grouping of paintings as part of an upcoming show called “The Intrepid.”

Set to take place at Spain’s Galería Javier López & Fer Francés gallery, the presentation will feature vivid new compositions and surrealist still lifes that recall Matissian interiors and idyllic landscapes with James’ sinister and suggestive twist. The surrealist still lifes in particular, reference everyday contemporary life in the Western World while also referencing “countries that the USA influences politically and culturally, as they share in the same consumer-society dilemmas,” as per a statement by the gallery.

The artist explores themes across his pieces, but there is a strong focus on the concept of love versus death emanating visually in the works. For example, one painting features a colorful skull figure hovering over a female subject who appears to be asleep. The skull represents death while the female subject symbolize love.

“Lascivious women surrounded by weapons, accompanied by skeletons and skulls, or with their usual cats, are depicted from the viewpoint of a voyeur with whom we may identify. Through them he offers a Pop-Art flavoured interpretation of the vital and antagonistic impulses of Eros and Thanatos,” said the gallery in a s statement.

Elsewhere in art, MADSAKI will soon unveil new sculptures and paintings inspired by He-Man and the Masters of the Universe as part of an exhibition in Kaikai Kiki Gallery.
