MOCA Unveils Face Masks Designed by Virgil Abloh, Alex Israel and More
Proceeds from the sales will support MOCA’s operations during COVID-19.

Given the importance of face masks in preventing the spread of coronavirus, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles has released a series of limited-production, artist-designed face masks to make the experience of art accessible and encourage the urgency of contemporary expression. The masks were designed by nine artists, including Virgil Abloh, Barbara Kruger, Yoko Ono, Hank Willis Thomas and The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.
Mostly made of %100 cotton, the masks are comprised of two layers of fabric and feature a pocket on the inside with open sides so that customers can insert their own filter for extra protection. A closed loop at the top and ties at the bottom allow the mask to be put on effortlessly and tied securely when needed. All masks were crafted in Los Angeles and vary in materials based on the design.
Featured designs include Alex Israel’s Sky Backdrop mask with detachable Self-Portrait and Happy Avocado pins, Abloh’s “STILL SPEAKS LOUDLY” all-black mask and Pipilotti Rist’s colorful face covering of Smart Yuji. Each reusable mask was handmade by Citizens of Humanity in Los Angeles.
Retailing for $28 USD each, the masks are available now on MOCA’s webstore. All nine of the masks, plus a special MOCA face covering, can be purchased for $280 USD.
