Gosha Levochkin Explores a "Synthetic Reality" in First Hong Kong Exhibition

Vivid paintings that reflect his childhood memory of cars.

New York-based artist Gosha Levochkin is gearing up to launch his first-ever solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Taking place in Over the Influence gallery, the show titled “Synthetic Reality” features a selection of vivid paintings in the style of ligne claire – a French term that translates to “clear line” in English with practitioners emphasizing strong, divisive lines and minimal blending as well as shading when creating images.

The artist’s mouthless Russian Cowboy character is observed across the visually-disorienting works that draw upon the artist’s childhood memory of cars. The gallery expressed in a statement: “Levochkin tells the story of childhood playtime. Growing up in Russia, kids would play inside abandoned cars and nothing seemed more exciting than a brand-new automobile. Levochkin’s new works use the car as an anchor to reality while simultaneously disorienting the point of view of the narrative. Is the car crushing the girl, or is she dancing triumphantly on its undercarriage? What is story and what is truth?”

Levochkin often recalls personal experiences to create his colorful compositions while referencing visual elements found in graffiti, comics, and Japanese animation. “His work represents the harmonious interactions of subjects, who naturally dismissing the bounds of cultural hegemony, are able to overcome and adapt to complicated situations,” the gallery added.

Elsewhere, arts organisation SECCA has announced the launch of “DRAWN: Concept & Craft,” an exhibition featuring over 200 works from a wide range of artists from around the world.
