Brooklyn Museum Announces Reopening, Major KAWS Exhibition and More
The institution will start welcoming visitors on September 12.

Not long ago, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that most cultural institutions in New York will reopen at the end of August including the Museum of Modern Art on August 27. Several museums are also set to open their doors this September such as The Whitney on September 3 and The American Museum of Natural History on September 9. The latest historical establishment to follow suit is the Brooklyn Museum that is preparing to welcome visitors on September 12.
For its preparations, the Brooklyn Museum will be following the social distancing rules outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and local health officials. These guidelines include a reduced capacity in the galleries, online ticket reservations for timed-entry and encouraging visitors to read up on the CDC’s comprehensive safety plan to know what to expect before arriving. Moreover, physical distancing and face masks will be required as well as handwashing and sanitizing when perusing throughout the spaces in the building. The Museum’s Café and restaurant, The Norm, will still be closed and all in-person tours and indoor public programs are on pause until the end of the year.
One of the more standout exhibitions that visitors will encounter following the museum’s reopening is “Studio 54: Night Magic.” The presentation was initially set to open back in March 13. It’s billed as the first show to chronicle the aesthetics and social politics of the iconic Manhattan nightclub with over 600 objects on display encompassing archival fashion design, drawings, paintings, film, decor and music. Additionally, the institution’s massive multimedia exhibition on acclaimed French artist JR, titled “Chronicles” has been extended through October 18.
In its reopening announcement, the Brooklyn Museum also mentioned a comprehensive survey on KAWS titled “WHAT PARTY.” The immense showcase is devoted to the acclaimed artist’s 25-year career and will feature over 100 objects on display including drawings, paintings, bronze sculptures, furniture and large-scale wooden sculptures of COMPANION. The show will be open to the public from February 12 until September 5, 2021.
