KAWS, Marina Abramović and Jeff Koons to Mount Flags at Rockefeller Center

193 artists to participate in the public art initiative called The Flag Project.

New York City’s historic Rockefeller Center will play host to a public art initiative called “The Flag Project” this summer. A total of 193 artists have submitted their designs for the outdoor installation. Participating artists include Jeff Koons, Marina Abramović, KAWS, Hank Willis Thomas, Jenny Holzer, Shantell Martin and Faith Ringgold. The initiative aims to celebrate New York City’s diverse culture, strength and resiliency amid the ongoing health crisis.

“There are as many ways to celebrate the strength, vibrancy and spirit of New York as there are people in our City. We are thrilled that so many emerging and acclaimed artists are taking part in The Flag Project and we are excited to share all the original works in one place, surrounding the beloved skating rink at Rockefeller Center,”
Rob Speyer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tishman Speyer, said in a statement.

Over one thousand designs from across the globe were submitted for the project. Winning entries were selected by a committee comprised of Casey Fremont (Executive Director, Art Production Fund), Ernest Green (civil rights advocate), Margaret Morton (Director of Creativity and Free Expression, Ford Foundation), Faith Ringgold (artist), and the Ali Forney Center. Each winning design was produced into an eight by five foot flag.
