Strangeloop Studios Debut 'Children of the Void' Dystopian Short Film

Exploring an alternate reality devoid of power structures.

Los Angeles-based Strangeloop Studios just unveiled an experimental short film titled Children of the Void. The animation stars an independent group of wild children traversing through a post-apocalyptic world devoid of capitalistic power structures.

“My favorite thing about the ‘Children of the Void’ is that they’re not trying to advance any agenda – they just appeared,” said the film’s executive producer, Ian Simon, to HYPEBEAST. “They’re engaged in play, and the creation of art, not antagonism or warfare; but for some reason, the ripple effects of their actions cause the dissolution of capitalist hegemonies, and shake the foundation of existing power structures. They’re not a threat to anyone except those who abhor change, or are close-minded to the joyfully psychedelic.”

A team of artists and collaborators developed the film in 12 months, combining 2D and 3D animation.”It feels like the idea for COTV had been there years before we finally were able to make this short, kind of preamble, to a world I’d be dreaming of. This world first came to me while I was listening to Steve Reich’s Drumming Part 1… I was listening with my eyes closed and saw all the shots unfold, very spontaneously, like a movie playing in my head… all these kids in the future in a kind of tribalistic post-apocalyptic scenario, but imbued with strange powers that were seen as a threat by the outside world,” said the film’s director, David Wexler, to HYPEBEAST.

Strangeloop Studios has created original concert content for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Flying Lotus, Lizzo, Pharrell, and many more. Watch Children of the Void above and visit Strangeloop Studios’ website to view more projects.

Elsewhere, teamLab will hold an immersive outdoor exhibition in Japan’s Mifuneyama Rakuen Park.
