Takashi Murakami, MADSAKI and More Explore Portraiture in Perrotin Exhibition

Marking the gallery’s new location in Hong Kong.

To celebrate its relocation to Hong Kong’s Victoria Dockside, Perrotin is lauching a group exhibition titled “Kaleidoscopes: Contemporary Portraiture.” The show features 10 leading artists, including Takashi Murakami, Barry McGee, MADSAKI, Aya Takano and more. Using the art form as a starting point, “Kaleidoscopes: Contemporary Portraiture” explores ways in which the human experience can be understood and transformed through different manners of representation and self-representation.

As portraiture evolved from its documentary function to more abstract and revelatory representations, artists have found ways to express themselves and their contemporaries in different ways. The portraits form “a kaleidoscopic view of likeness at once familiar and destabilizing, a reflection invoking multiple narratives, states of being, and metamorphosing selves,” Perrotin says in a statement. Highlights of the show include Murakami’s bronze and stainless steel Pom & Me sculpture, Takano’s playful painting titled Nepalese rug♡Himalayan monal, rhododendron, festival of dog, chatpate, and Jean-Philippe Delhomme’s portrait, Joséphine.
