Meguru Yamaguchi Unveils New Sculptural Paintings in "HIGHER SELF" Exhibition

Also displaying past apparel collaborations with Issey Miyake, Nike, ALIFE and more.

After raising over $20,000 USD for the NAACP to support Black Lives Matter as part of an artwork auction organized by roosi, Meguru Yamaguchi returns with a sprawling new exhibition at Tokyo’s Seibu Shibuya outpost. Titled “HIGHER SELF,” the presentation features a slew of new sculptural paintings by the celebrated Japanese artist. A total of 20 new works are on display, reflecting on Yamaguchi’s ongoing practice of creating three-dimensional brushstrokes.

Yamaguchi created the paintings under the series REVISUALIZED amid the COVID-19 crisis. Unlike his earlier sculptural paintings, these newer pieces showcase the rawness of his signature brushstrokes with the artist undergoing new techniques to push the boundaries of the materials used to create his works. Whereas his previous creations feature a glossy resin finish, the REVISUALIZED works are left unpolished and untouched so viewers can observe the variety of textures across his abstract compositions.

Accompanying the works on display are past apparel collaborations including pieces from Issey Miyake Men, Uniqlo, Nike, ALIFE, among others. Check out the installation views for “HIGHER SELF” in the slideshow above. “HIGHER SELF” is on view at Seibu Shibuya until August 10.

Elsewhere in art, Hauser & Wirth is spotlighting iconic paintings by Philip Guston as part of a three upcoming online viewing rooms.
