David Kordansky Gallery Imbues Virtual Art Basel Booth With Intimate Portraiture
With pieces by Deana Lawson, Rashid Johnson and more.
Any other year, the art world would be descending on the small Swiss town of Basel about this time of year for the annual Art Basel fair. But, as has happened in the fashion world, the art fair is forced to go digital this year due to the COVID-19 crisis. Public previews for the virtual version of Art Basel begin this Friday, while VIP previews kick off tomorrow (even coronavirus will not do away with VIP sections). Among the galleries showing this year is David Kordansky Gallery.
The Los Angeles-based contemporary gallery has chosen an eclectic array of artists to feature at its Art Basel lineup. David Kordansky’s selection includes works from Tom of Finland, Ricky Swallow, Rashid Johnson and Deana Lawson, among others. Lawson’s 2008 Coulson Family in particular stands out; the intimate portrait was shown at MoMA’s “New Photography 2011” exhibition. Her work will be shown at Sikkema Jenkins & Co.’s Art Basel selection as well, and was also recently awarded a solo exhibition at the 34th Bienal de São Paulo.
Much of the works in David Kordansky Gallery’s booth are from 2020 and traverse various mediums. Among its 2020 artworks are Ruby Neri’s glazed ceramic sculpture Women with Doll (Multiple Views) and Jennifer Guidi’s Desert Beauty (Painted Purple Sand SF #1A, Light Purple-Pink Sky, Purple Mountain, Yellow Ground), which mixes sand, acrylic and oil on linen.
David Kordanksy’s showing and other Online Viewing Rooms will run from June 19 to June 26, 2020 on Art Basel’s website with preview days from June 17 to June 19.
